Family: Icteridae
Physical characteristics: 7.5-9.5"
Male: black with red and yellow patch on the bend of the wing
Female: brown with streaks on the belly and a sharp pointed beak
No full plumage until the third year
Voice: Song- sounds like “conk-ka-ree” or
“ok-a lee”, Call- long note “chick”
Geography: breeding range is from Canada to Florida and Texas, winters
are spent in the southern and coastal US.
Nesting: Males arrive early in spring and set up territories in
hayfields/swamps/freshwater wetlands. Females set up nest within
these territories and make a cup nest
of vegetation. Incubation period is 10-12 days
Diet: Insects and seeds.
