Description
Body length:12", over a third of which is tail.
Weight: 6 oz.
Color: Rufous red to red shading to olive. Belly white, with black line separating red from white in summer. "Ear tufts" in winter.
Habitat: Virtually anyplace where there are nuts, acorns, maple seed, and beechnuts for food. On campus, the hickory trees south of Donahue hall usually have at least one red squirrel in them.
Personality: Diurnal, but particularly active early and late in the day. Excellent climber and leaper. Also tunnels and stores food in caches underground
Diet: nuts, acorns, maple seed, and beechnuts for food.
Language: Various scolds and chatters. Often heard long before it is seen.
